The 595th Sapper Company welcomed its new commander, Capt. Robert M. Fullerton, in a ceremony on White Sands Missile Range Jan. 22.
A warm inviting January day on White Sands Missile Range served as the perfect backdrop to welcome a new company commander to the 595th Sapper Company. Over the course of the last 18months, Capt. Joshua J. Blizzard has served as 595th’s company commander, calling his time in command as, “the most rewarding and stressful job I have ever had. Company command has been the most rewarding experience in my life”. For their next step, Blizzard and his wife, Katie, are off to Germany where he will work in the Joint Multinational Readiness Center as an observer controller.
When a commander’s time in command has come to an end, it is time to “pass the guidon.” The passing of the guidon is highly symbolic as it represents the transfer of the unit’s history and the loyalty of its Soldiers from one commander to the next. Blizzard passed the guidon into the capable hands of Capt. Robert M. Fullerton. Fullerton and his wife, Tiffany, along with their four girls join the 595th Sapper Company and the 2nd Engineer Battalion from the 130th Engineer Brigade. During his remarks, Fullerton called taking over the 595th Sapper Company as a “dream come true”, and said he is blessed and excited to command such a storied company. With the guidon exchanged, Fullerton concluded the ceremony with a sharp salute to the battalion commander, Lt. Col. James Koeppen, as he stood in front of his formation for the first time as a company commander.
