International family members felt at home during a multicultural event hosted by the Army Community Service Multicultural Club and the Girl Scouts of the Desert Southwest at ACS April 24.
Almost 60 persons attended the event which featured presentations on several countries and cuisine from each country.
The Multicultural Club is supported by ACS as part of the Relocation Readiness Program, a program that helps individuals moving to WSMR make the transition to the installation easier.
“We want to extend a warm welcome to all the international families. If they don’t know anybody, they don’t come out. When they come out and share their knowledge, the community grows,” said Anna Maria Vestal, Exceptional Family Member Program and Army Family Team Building Manager.
ACS hosted the event with the Girl Scout troops because the scouts happened to be learning about international friendship.
The Girl Scouts presented on Germany, England, Norway, Mexico, and Russia. ACS staff and community members prepared dishes from each country. Financial assistance for the event was provided by Balfour Beatty.
“It was really nice. It was very helpful for me and ACS was able to help provide good areas for the event,” said Krys Tjarks, a Girl Scout volunteer who helped organize the event.
The Multicultural Club explores different countries each quarter. The next meeting is scheduled for Aug. 20 at 2 p.m. at ACS. The Girl Scouts will hold a recruitment event during the meeting.
