The newest homes on the installation are now available to civilians, including Department of Defense retirees, according to the Balfour Beatty corporate office. The new concept for housing was introduced shortly after the installation received word that part of the 2nd Engineer Battalion would transfer to other installations with the remaining to join a brigade in Fort Bliss, Texas.
The Soldiers from the battalion currently occupy 190 of WSMR’s 321 homes. Housing is currently open to civilians and Department of Defense retirees and those who currently live on post and wish to transfer to another community can do so in the summer of 2015. However, cases will be continually evaluated as the companies begin to depart.
“Active duty demand for these homes will decrease significantly, creating opportunities for civilians,” said Jennifer Dixon, WSMR Balfour Beatty manager.
Housing has always been available to Department of the Army civilians, federally affiliated civilians, and contractors; however they were only eligible to live in Legacy homes.
Potential applicants must have a current affiliation to the installation either as a government employee, contractor, or as a military retiree. Applicants will still have to go through the company’s extensive credit and background checks for all potential occupants over the age of 18. Proof of monthly income that is three times the home’s rental amount must also be provided. If the applicant is accepted, a security deposit that is equivalent to one month’s rent must be provided.
The prices are scaled from non-renovated legacy homes start at $895 and newer homes starting at $1,321 to $1,743. The fees include utilities and those who wish to bring their pets will not be asked for a pet deposit.
Newer homes include a master suite with a double vanity bathroom, larger closets, a two-car garage, larger indoor and outdoor storage, a xeriscaped front yard, and a drip irrigation and sprinkler system in back yard. All homes on the installation are upgraded with refrigerated air.
Along with the features in the houses themselves, residents can also benefit from additional free amenities. Residents can enjoy six playgrounds, one in each neighborhood, a skate park, a splash park, access to the BB community center, and a 24-hour maintenance services.
“On post housing provides optimum convenience,” Dixon said.
