Federal employees and military personnel have the opportunity to make a donation to organizations like the White Sands Missile Range Child, Youth and School Services and other charities through the WSMR Combined Federal Campaign until the deadline of Dec. 15.
WSMR CYS Services is one of the local organizations listed in the campaign book.
“(The donations are) very important to us to try to offer scholarships to different programs we have going on. It helps offset costs and takes the burden from parents who are having a difficult time,” said Shawn Ticho, Chief of Child Youth and School Services.
In a recent trip children took to Colorado, CYS Services was able to offset some costs using funds from donations made during last year’s campaign. The funds are also used during Month of the Military Child events to provide entertainment and activities for the children. According to Shawn, the funds can benefit over 600 children who participate in CYS Services programs.
“If anyone is interested in donating to CFC, think about us first,” Shawn said. “The money definitely goes back into the community. We use it to try to help the military and civilian kiddos as much as we can.”
The campaign, themed “Give for Good”, allows personnel to pledge donations to a number of national, international, and local charities.
Pledges can be made on the Desert Southwest CFC website. The site features a search engine where personnel can search for the charity of their choice. Donors can pledge to up to 30 charities. A hard copy listing of organizations is available and pledges can also be made in person.
“The book lists every type of organization you can imagine. It includes a description of each charity,” said Kathy Ticho, WSMR CFC Campaign Manager.
“People can make a hard copy donation. It can be deducted from their payroll, or they can pay with cash or check,” Kathy said.
Donations amounted to $43,300 out of the $100,000 goal as of Dec. 8. Last year, WSMR employees and military personnel reached their goal with about $98,000 in pledges.
The WSMR CFC is part of the Desert Southwest CFC. The Desert Southwest CFC includes federal employees and other military installations including Kirtland Air Force Base, Holloman Air Force Base, Cannon Air Force Base, Laughlin Air Force Base and Fort Bliss.
The amount pledged by all members of the Desert Southwest CFC totaled over $2.5 million last year.
