Recent changes to the Post Exchange at White Sands Missile Range have brought more emergency items to the store’s shelves.
The changes are part of a corporate strategy to create a wider assortment of items for installation communities.
“The store at White Sands is one of the first stores to get it. We try to not reduce the stock assortment because the sales are low, but we try to offer more and try to offer a wider assortment of emergency type items,” said Ray Emils, Fort Bliss Exchange General Manager.
“We went about this not from the standpoint that because (the 2nd Engineer Battalion) is leaving, we want to cut back, but we are trying to increase the variety of items,” Emils said.
While community members may do their main shopping at Fort Bliss Post Exchange or at stores in the surrounding cities, they visit the WSMR Post Exchange for items they may unexpectedly need during the week. According to Emils, the store has stocked up on over 60 categories to include more popular items, such as snacks, emergency items, and electronic accessories.
“If your cell phone charger breaks in the middle of the week, we’ve got that now. If you drop your baby’s pacifier through the dirt and you don’t want to pick it up, we have that now. We didn’t carry all those things before,” Emils said.
A portion of the sales floor space has been re-allotted as storage space due to the wider variety of items.
Some items in the store have been reorganized to more convenient locations for shoppers. Shelves holding military Battle Dress Uniforms are now located at the entrance of the store. The health and beauty items have also been relocated.
Emils expects the changes to the store to be completed early next year.
Items that are not found at the WSMR Post Exchange and can be brought from the Fort Bliss Post Exchange can be delivered to WSMR residents free of charge through a shuttle program offered by the Fort Bliss Post Exchange. WSMR residents can make a request for items by speaking to management at the WSMR store.
“The largest PX in the world is 45 minutes away,” said Emils. “If you want to come to Bliss, that’s great, but if you don’t, we bring Bliss to you.”
