The AKO email system, created for ease of use for Soldiers during transition periods from one post to another, will shut down March 31.
WSMR Information Management Director Mark Tubbs said that with the evolution of enterprise email, an individual’s email now moves with them to any location, making the AKO email system unnecessary.
Tubbs said that personnel must ensure they update their CAC certificate email address with their enterprise email address. Doing these updates will in turn update the enterprise email global address list.
“All Department of the Army military and civilian personnel have been transitioned to Enterprise email so there are not any foreseeable repercussions,” Tubbs said
If users are unsure if their CAC certificate email address is updated, they can contact the WSMR Help Desk. WSMR Help Desk Analyst Mid Dennis Vigil said users who need to update their email address can do so through the milConnect website.
Although AKO users are not required to shutdown their email accounts, emails will only be forwarded until June 30, which may affect those who rely on AKO email. In the past, non DoD personnel have been able to use AKO email services by being sponsored by DoD personnel. Since the AKO email system will be removed, non DoD personnel will also no longer have access to the AKO email system.
“These non DoD personnel must now seek alternatives for personal email,” Tubbs said.
If you think you may still have an old us.army.mil email address click on the “milConnect” radio button at the bottom of the WSDM News screen. After entering with your CAC the first screen will show your email address in red. If you still have a us.army.mil email address click on “Rapids Self Service” located in the center of the list on the right hand column. Click “ok” to enter. Click on the “update email” icon located in the top right hand of the screen. “Accept” the terms and conditions. “Run” the software, this may take a couple of minutes. Once it is done running, the system will automatically update your us.army.mil address to your mail.mil address. Click on “update” and then “yes” to confirm, this may take a couple more minutes. After that you can logoff from the system. If you experience any issues contact the local helpdesk at 678-4220.
