The White Sands Missile Range Golf Course, known by many local golfers for having one of the most majestic views and peaceful surroundings, is open to anyone eligible to enter a military installation.
“If you’re wanting to get away from the city and the noise just come to White Sands,” said WSMR assistant golf professional Vaughn Weddington.
Currently, the golf course has a special of $20 for 9 holes or $29 for 18 holes for visitors who wish to play from Tuesday through Thursday. The weekend rate for visitors is $35. Military members and retiree fees are based on rank and range from $10 to $32 for 18 holes. The cart fees are $9 for 8 holes and $14 for 18 holes.
“It’s quiet and it’s not very busy so it’s not a golf course that has seen abuse,” Weddington said.
There are six major tournaments that are hosted at the WSMR golf course. Weddington said there are three tournaments for males and three for females. The Senior Open will take place on June 13 and 14 and the Men’s Open will take place on July 11 and 12.
WSMR Physical Security Specialist Gordon Ferguson said individuals who wish to visit the golf course must be able to provide a valid photo id, proper vehicle registration, and insurance at the gate. Ferguson said all visitors must go through a criminal history background check that they must pass in order to access the installation. The extra precautionary measures allow for the installation to offer these unique facilities to the public without compromising the military installation’s security. These security measures also ensure visitors are playing on what is possibly the most highly secure and most scenic course within the area.
“We have one of the most scenic golf courses of Las Cruces since we are based at the base of the mountains,” Weddington said.
