The White Sands Post Library is now open. Colin R. O’Hanlon recently arrived from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to serve as the new post librarian. The library will now be open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a 12p.m to 1 p.m. closure for a lunch break in between. Below is a short question and answer session to get to know your new post librarian:
Name & Job Title
Colin R. O’Hanlon Sr., Family and Morale, Welfare, and Recreation Post Librarian.
Where are you coming from?
My family and I are from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. As soon as my wife and I heard of a job offer here in New Mexico we really jumped on the offer. Our family has been in several different climates around the world and humidity is the worst. New Mexico has little to no humidity, so we were in.
Where did you graduate from?
I have a Master’s degree in Library and Information Science (M.L.I.S.) from the University of Pittsburgh Information School, which I obtained a year ago in December. In June 2013 I obtained a Bachelor of the Arts degree from the University of Maryland University College Europe. I majored in History and minored in Sociology.
What is your professional background?
I served in the U.S. Army as an Armament Technician for 9 years from 2004 to 2013. In my last duty station I was the Section Sergeant of an Armament shop in Schweinfurt, Germany. I have two-combat tours, the first in Camp Liberty-Iraq from 2009 to 2010 and the second in FOB Sharana, Afghanistan from 2011 to 2012. After the Army I spent my time at school utilizing the Post 9/11 G.I. Bill and volunteering at a VA Medical Library outside of Pittsburgh.
Can you tell me a little about yourself?
I’m an avid military historian, motorcycle rider, and currently a gardener…I’m attempting to grow grass for my yard on-post. Above all else, I am a family man. My wife Alexandra, is currently a Certified Nurse Assistant and will be attending school in the fall to pursue her Registered Nurse degree. I also have two energetic young boys, Colin Jr or CJ who is 8 years old and Phelan who is 7 years old.
What do you hope to accomplish during your time here?
I would like to bring the post library into the 21st Century. Many people believe that Libraries in general are just static/brick-and-mortar organizations, but this is not the case. While the library as a “physical place” will still serve as the focal point for self-enrichment, leisure, and research; I would like to implement more online services to reach out and meet the growing demand of the “online information consumer.” Aside from long term goals, I will operate the library as any other. So, if Google cannot help I can always assist you with one-on-one research including personal (i.e. family history/leisure) as well as professional development (school or technical).
I look forward to serving all of your “information needs” as well as being a part of the WSMR community.
