WSMR’s School Age Care and Middle School and Teen Center have an exciting, action packed summer planned for the WSMR youth this year. A teen taxi service, graphic design camps, and animation camps are just some of the new programs that have been incorporated into the week long summer programs.
“We’re trying to give the kids experiences instead of just doing arts and crafts,” said CYS Services Coordinator Shawn Ticho.
Ticho said the weeklong summer programs are planned out for the entire day. Prices for the camps are the standard DoD fees based on salary. However, Ticho said even the highest level price for the summer camps add up to roughly a little over $3 per hour.
“For what your child gets for that amount of money it’s really a good value,” Ticho said. “Its piece of mind. You know where your child is, you know they’re safe and you know they’re doing something fun.”
Some of the camps include Harry Potter camp, Style camp, and Scuba Diving skills.
With every camp, Ticho said they work towards incorporating life lessons including building self-esteem. The Middle School and Teen Center will be bringing outside professionals for several of their camps. The cheerleading camp that is being offered will be led by the Universal Cheerleading Association. Ticho said these camps are exceptional compared to others offered throughout the area. He said several other installations have contacted them to see how they are able to manage offering so many unique camps.
“A lot of effort is put into the program. We’re really meeting the needs of the children,” Ticho said.
Natalie Garley, WSMR Middle School and Teen Center director said she is excited to roll out a new idea for this year’s summer camps. She said that because transportation has been a recurring issue for several students, a Teen Taxi will now be implemented to this year’s program. The taxi will depart from the Middle School and Teen center after the camp members end their day at camp with lunch. The taxi will arrive promptly at 1:30 p.m. at Oñate High School. The taxi will return to the MST center and return to the high school at 7:30 p.m. Garley said the taxi can also be used for teens who wish to travel to Oñate.
There are also free services that are provided at the MST center after 1 p.m. Lunch is provided to anyone who is registered at CYS, free of charge. Garley said the free events will be based on weekly themes. The themes vary from “Water Week” to “Wild West” themes and include field trips. Some of the trips are free of charge, however some require a fee of no more than $20.
“Compared to in town, we do a lot of cool things for a cheaper price,” Garley said.
She said they usually see an increase of students outside of the installation during their summer programs because they offer such a unique array of programs at a deeply discounted price in comparison to prices in town.
“We provide everything, including the equipment. Not a lot of other facilities offer that,” Garley said. “Most students are excited to have the opportunity to experience something they weren’t able to experience during a school schedule.”
Registration is now open for all of the summer camps. For more information or to obtain a packet please call CYS at 678-2441.
