Glen Adams was recently appointed as White Sands Missile Range’s Chief of Staff.
Where are you from and where is home for you?
Home is wherever my wife and family are, which in this case is Peachtree City, Georgia. I am an Army brat and retired from the Army, so I haven’t really had one place to call home. My wife and I have always joked that we are southern by choice. Now southwestern!
Who are your family members?
My best friend and wife is Bridget Adams, we have two sons: James, our eldest, who is a rising sophomore at Mississippi State University “Hail State!” He is our athlete. John, our youngest, is a rising senior at Starr’s Mill High School in Peachtree City, Georgia. He is our social chameleon and can make anyone smile.
When you were younger what did you aspire to be?
The standard list was, first cowboy, then police officer, then doctor. Doctor dropped off the list in high school when I learned how long I had to stay in school. I then decided what my dad was doing was super cool, and that’s when I wanted to be a Soldier.
What led you to civilian service?
I retired in 2011, I believed a life of service was behind me. The thing is, you miss being part of something bigger than yourself, part of something important, and you have a yearning to be part of a team that will make a difference. That is why I came back to a life of service, this time as a civilian.
Do you have any stories you would like to share from your time outside of military service?
Life is an adventure! I loved my time as my own boss. I definitely understood the concept of an honest day’s work for an honest day’s pay! Ultimately, it comes down to relationships. I built a great group of friends/contractors. I kept my mentors and former military leaders close and eventually they were the key to being able to return to a life of service. I’m definitely humbled and appreciative for my ability to join such an amazing team as “Team WSMR”!
What have you learned from previous leadership roles?
A lot. Delegate: You can’t do it all! Empower: Just because someone does it differently doesn’t mean they did it wrong, and often you are surprised to find out they did it better than you could have. Team: Shared thoughts, concepts, ideas, even failed attempts at things coming from a diverse group can find solutions to even the most complex issues. Involving others, getting input, giving people credit where credit is due all lends to a better plan and consequently better execution of what was planned. Finally, endorse failure: people aren’t perfect, but more often than not they are trying the best they can. Dust them off and set them back on the path, then sit back and watch them perform.
Is there anyone who helped guide you to where you are today?
More NCO’s, peers, friends, mentors and team mates than I can share with you today. I was never the reason I was successful, it was those I worked with that had the successes. I was just along for the ride and bear witness to their amazing accomplishments.
What do you and your family like to do for fun?
Honestly, hang out with friends, playing backyard sports, barbequing, and relaxing. We like to take short trips to places and hit the highlights of what that place has to offer, you know, get new worldly experiences. Just before I moved here, we drove to Hershey, Pennsylvania to go to the Hershey Park, then to Niagara to do the full Niagara Falls experience, and we found the opportunity to stop at Cumberland Falls, Kentucky just to say we went there too!
What do you like to do for fun?
I like walking the dogs with my wife, it is always such a kick to spend the time with her and watch our three dogs doing some of the craziest things. After that, I like pretending to know how to play golf with my friends!
How do you feel about coming to WSMR?
I’m excited! I get to be a part of such an amazing team, all of whom get to put a little piece of themselves into the future weapons system our Soldiers will use to defend this great nation. I can’t think of a better customer than a Soldier! I only hope our customer service is up to the task of developing systems to counter what this complex world is coming up with to fight us!
What do you hope to accomplish while you’re here?
Integrate as part of the team and if the good Lord is willing, finesse things to work more efficiently while empowering the work force to be even more successful. Make every effort to develop personally into the Chief of Staff White Sand’s deserves.
