Children at White Sands Missile Range will soon be speaking more than one language with the start of the Child, Youth & School Services SKIESUnlimited “Como Se Dice?” Preschool Bilingual Spanish Program for ages 3 to 5.
The once a week program, headed by Maria Pangborn, a Child and Youth Program Assistant at the Child Development Center, is scheduled to begin Oct. 21. Registration is ongoing.
Pangborn said children will learn basic vocabulary in the bilingual English and Spanish class, to include their colors, numbers, letters, shapes and days of the week. Children will have the opportunity to learn conversational Spanish through their everyday work and play experiences.
“They will learn about everyday things around them,” Pangborn said. “This program will focus more on vocabulary and being able to identify everyday things.” Pangborn said she will also incorporate reading, math, science and art, and will include centers and circle time.
Activities will be focused around a monthly theme and with the holidays approaching, some of the first learning experiences will center around Fall, family and cultural celebrations.
Pangborn said they need a minimum of 5 children to enroll to start the program. To enroll your child, contact Cindy Grooms at (575) 678-2708. As a self-paced class, students are welcome to join at any time throughout the school year. The program will continue through May 2016.
Pangborn, who has been working with children for over eight years, said it will benefit children in the long run to speak more than one language.
“We have so much cultural diversity, learning Spanish will help them build better conversational skills, while learning about other cultures at the same time,” Pangborn said.
Classes are every Wednesday from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at the Child Development Center with lunch provided. Lunches will be prepared and served by the Child Development Center kitchen staff and follows USDA guidelines. During lunch, children will have an opportunity to learn new vocabulary as they learn about the foods they are eating as well as practice what they’ve learned throughout the day by talking with each other and the teacher using their bilingual skills.
Registration is open and ongoing with the first session scheduled to begin Oct. 21. Prices vary from $30 to $45 depending on how many times the class meets during each month.
