Editor’s Note: We asked four students at White Sands School a series of questions for the Month of the Military Child. Each week, one or two children will be featured with their responses. Look for the compilation video on our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/wsmrPublicAffairs
Edward Oliver Ghelardini, 13, is a student at White Sands School whose father serves in the military.
Who serves in the military in your family? My dad, Maj. Edward Oliver Ghelardini. We both have pretty much the same interests. We both enjoy video games a lot. He’s served I’m pretty sure about 11 years. My dad, his great grandfather was in the military, he served in WWII, something involving airplanes.
What do you like most about being a military child? I can go to the PX. There’s the discounts and stuff like that but I never use that.
What do you like the least? Having to move to a new school or the temperature in climate change. Before I was here we were in Kentucky but I was born in New York. This is the only time I’ve been from Eastern Time.
How do you deal with the difficult part? Making friends isn’t that hard. People usually comment on my jacket because it’s not even cold here but I wear it because I don’t really like the sun.
Where have you lived? Apparently Texas, Illinois and New York. Kentucky as well. I’ve never been out of the country I can tell you that.
If you could, would you change the fact that your dad decided to serve? No.
Why do you think it’s important for people like your dad to serve? It helps with some problems we have today. It helps with projects the military has. It also helps with the problems in computer systems.
What advice would you give other military children? When you move you might not meet the same people and sometimes you might meet the same people who were your friends. You might meet completely different people but you can always make friends.
What do you want to be when you grow up? I work on robotics and computers. I think I got that from my dad. I’d possibly want to do that or just get a career as a YouTuber.
