Army Substance Abuse Program
April is Alcohol Awareness Month, and this year White Sands Missile Range’s Army Substance Abuse Program staff members participated in the Shattered Lives program at Mayfield High School in Las Cruces.
ASAP took their Simulated Impaired Driving Experience Vehicles along and demonstrated the effects of impairment on driving skills.
As much fun as the simulations were, the stark reality of what can really happen was emphasized through the Shattered Lives program.
The entire high school walked out to the front of their building to witness a crash unfold before their very eyes.
Doña Ana County spared no expense and every detail was demonstrated in a way that really brought the reality home.
When walking up to the crash site, the injured and dead were strewn about. The makeup artists were skilled in the importance of visual effects. The police, ambulance and fire department blazed in with sirens howling and the helicopter arrived as the seriousness of the injuries were discovered.
A mother of one of the victims screamed as her child’s body bag was being sealed.
As expected the Coroner’s office and hearse soon appeared. The men taking the body away were dressed in suits as the rescue workers diligently focused on stabilizing another victim that was in critical condition.
What struck me the most was listening to the students selected to be in the program.
Some were selected because of their influential status and others were chosen because they were high risk. Some had turned their lives around and were now focused in a productive manner.
What they all had in common was a zest for life. Some had found this in a destructive way and others found it in life enhancing ways.
One young man shared his past destructive behavior. He shared that five months ago he had a spiritual awakening and turned his life around. The clarity in his eyes and conviction in his voice was very inspirational. “All I know is that we can’t keep what we have unless we give it away,” he said.
Although the program is called Shattered Lives…the outcome is Stronger Lives.
