Murder at the Pie Auction will be performed May 13, in our White Sands School gym. This play is also a fund raiser for the drama program at our school, so it will be more than just an excellent performance. We would appreciate parent volunteers for several areas of this wonderfully exciting endeavor. Two years ago, when my previous drama class performed this play, we sold a significant amount of tickets and the audience was quite large. Things have changed since then, but I feel the need to be over, rather than under prepared, for this performance.
This event will consist of:
The play– Murder at the Pie Auction
A real pie contest and silent auction
A slice of pie offered to each person buying a ticket
To help with organization, I have broken the needs down to– before, during and after the performance.
In preparation for the performance we need help with:
Costumes—Being able to sew isn’t a requirement of this task, we just need someone who is willing to find what we need at used clothing stores in our area, and possible order some minor items on line. The students have been working on this individually, but there is still a need for 1950s looking items.
Props—We are in need of items that will make our set look like a senior center in Mynute, Alaska, 1950s era…possibly animal skins, deer antlers, etc.
Pies—We need pies to serve at the performance. We would like the audience to receive a slice of pie to be eaten as they watch the performance. I have checked at Sam’s Club, and the large pies they have there are about $12 each. I figure that each pie should serve about 8 people. That puts the servings at $1.50 a piece. I would like help researching a way to get the price of the slices down. This area is in need of a creative people. The idea is to include the pie serving with every ticket sold, so that we can anticipate the number of pies needed.

Ticket Sales—We will need to start selling tickets as soon as possible so that we can gauge how many chairs and pieces of pie we will need. The chairs will need to be borrowed from another school, and the pies were mentioned above. If any parent knows of a place we can borrow chairs on the base, please let me know.
Advertisement—We will need help distributing our advertisement on base. The students will be making the posters.
Pie Baking Contest and Auction (A Real One!)—The drama troupe thought it would be great to ask for entries in a real contest to be held the day of the performance. All of this would be set up in the gym or the lobby of the school. Donated pies could then be auctioned off, silent auction, as another way for us to make money. The winners of the real pie baking contest could be announced at the end of the performance. If you are a “Betty Crocker” and have a pie to enter in the contest we want to encourage your participation! Also, if you have a relative or a friend that you think should enter their unique pie, please tell them about this contest? We will also be encouraging the students to enter and make pies for the silent auction.
On the day of the performance:
Serving the Pies—
Parent help with picking up serving boats and forks at Southwest Cash and Carry, possibly seeking out donations would be a huge help!
It would be helpful to have a volunteer pick up the pies, so that we don’t have to store them, and volunteers help with cutting, serve and clean up.
After the performance: (Most important job of all!)
We will need all drama students and willing family members to stack chairs/tables and generally clean up the gym/lobby area.
