The White Sands Missile Range Post Library is gearing up for its Summer Reading Program “Read for the Win” with a kick-off event June 18.
Sign up for the program at the kick-off party 10 a.m. June 18 at the Post Library Building 465 Room 113. There will be drinks, light snacks, games, official registration and an orientation to the program.
“A major benefit of the program is that it encourages children to read throughout the summertime and to avoid learning losses when entering in the new school year,” said Librarian Colin O’Hanlon.
The reading program includes six weeks of reading June 22 to July 27 for three reading levels.
There will be weekly story times and activities and awards for participants.
The reading program award ceremony is 10 a.m. July 30.
Regular programs will be held Wednesdays at 10 a.m. at the WSMR library.
Children attending Child Youth and School Services Summer Programs will be encouraged to read each day in support of the WSMR Summer Reading Program.
Parent must attend program with their children.
The library has some designated books that will be used for the weekly story time events and any participants can read whatever they are interested in. The books can be checked out at the library or even read on an eReader as an eBook. The goal of the program is for participants to track their daily reading time/achieve overall goals for that particular reading level.
There will be weekly prize raffles for those who attend the story time events. Also, if participants reach the overall reading time goal for that reading level/age group, they qualify for the grand prizes at the award ceremony/prize drawing at the end of the program.
Those interested in volunteering in the program stop by the Post Library to see O’Hanlon or call (575) 678-5820.
