White Sands Missile Range will hold its annual installation full scale exercise Oct. 17 and 18 between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.
This specific exercise is an antiterrorism exercise designed to test WSMR’s ability to deal with real-world scenarios on the installation.
The exercise applies to all members of Team WSMR to include Department of Defense military, civilian personnel and supporting defense contractors, as well as all persons visiting any facilities on WSMR.
Many of the actions that will occur will be transparent to the work force and residents of WSMR. There will be no changes in work or school hours. Mail, to include FedEx and USPS deliveries and pickups will occur as normal. As the exercise is taking place and the Force Protection Condition levels increase, regular visitors to WSMR may encounter delays at all entry gates, along with random vehicle checks conducted by the Directorate of Emergency Services Police and Security Guards. Anyone entering the installation should be prepared for a 100 percent ID check.
The installation will exercise an “active shooter” lockdown drill at select facilities on Oct. 18 that will include the White Sands Elementary and Middle School. Parents are being informed now so they are aware.
Oro Grande Gate will be closed to all traffic Oct. 18 from 8 to 11 a.m. Traffic routes could be diverted due to exercise situations, as well as parking lot closures. Please be patient and allow for extra time when attempting to reach your destination.
