Italian Café weekend hours
The Italian Café will be closed July 3-5 for the Fourth of July weekend. The Frontier Club and Bowling Center will be open normal operating hours.

Commissary extends hours
The new hours for the Commissary effective June 15 are as follows:

Closed on Sunday and Monday; Tuesday through Friday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Saturday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Introducing the Edge
The Edge is a month long package offered in the afternoons to give your youth an opportunity to participate in and experience some new and exciting activities in art, fitness, life and adventure packages.

Coming in July:
Adventure Edge: Shot gunning, this package is for youth 12-18 years of age.

This package will be run Mondays and Tuesdays from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. for the month of July.

This package is an introduction to the sport of skeet shooting.

This package is available to the first 20 youth to register at no cost to families.

Art Edge: The world of multi-crafts. This package is for grades 1-5.

This package will be run Wednesday, Thursday and Fridays from 4 to 5:30 p.m. for the month of July.

This package is available to the first 10 youth to register.

The fee for this package is $36 for fee category 1 and $45 for fee categories 2-6.

If your youth is already enrolled in after camp care there is no additional charge for this.

Registration will begin June 15 and end June 29 at 10a.m. at Building 501 second floor at CYS services central registration for these packages.

Youth must also first be registered with Child Youth and School Services.

First Day of School Holiday
The 10th annual First Day of School Holiday is just around the corner. This event is scheduled for Aug. 13 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the White Sands School. An opening ceremony will be held at 1 p.m. The target audience is parents of children who will be attending White Sands Schools during the coming year.

Getting parents and the entire community involved in education is a win-win situation for students, teacher, administrators and parents. The goal of this event is to provide a variety of information on community agencies that service and support our White Sands community.

If your organization is interested in sharing information with our families on the services you offer, and would like to participate in this event, please call Child, Youth and School Services at 678-7704.

Mann’s farewell lunch
The White Sands community is invited to a farewell luncheon in honor of WSMR Commanding General Brig. Gen. and Mrs. David L. Mann at 11:30 a.m. July 10 at the Frontier Club. R.S.V.P. by June 30 by calling 678-3783 or wsmrprotocol@conus.army.mil

Diablos military night
Watch the El Paso Diablos take on the Pensacola Pelicans 7 p.m. Aug. 15 at Cohen Stadium for Military Appreciation Night. Free tickets available to all WSMR ID card holders starting July 13 at ITR, Building 460. Military have priority June 30 thru July 12. For more information call Sue Staub at 678-1256.

Boykin to speak at event
Las Cruces First Assembly of God will celebrate Independence Day on July 5 with special guest Lt. Gen. William “Jerry” Boykin. The public is invited to hear Boykin speak at 9 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. July 5 in the main worship center of the church, located at 5605 Bataan Memorial West in Las Cruces (Highway 70) East to Porter Drive. Exit Porter and turn left under overpass and left again on frontage road. Admission is free and childcare is provided.

Boykin served in a variety of posts during his 36-year career in the Army, most of them involving Delta Force and Special Forces.

Boykin was commander of the Delta Force units in Mogadishu, Somalia, during the “Black Hawk Down” incident in 1993, where he was wounded by a mortar blast.

Youth employment options
The Hired Program offers youth employment opportunities on post. The “Hired” Apprenticeship Program provides 15-18 year-old youth with meaningful, professionally-managed career-exploration opportunities in Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) operations. Youth can gain: cash awards, educational incentive awards, challenging career areas, workforce preparation and college exploration workshops.

Volunteer position available
The Army Community Service AFTB Program is seeking a volunteer as the Volunteer Program Manager. Army Family Team Building is an educational program designed to give individuals the tools to “survive and thrive” in the military environment.

Housing survey available
This survey is being distributed to all WSMR residents of Balfour Beatty Communities Military Housing. Your input is critical as this is the third survey under the Army’s Residential Communities Initiative (RCI) program which Balfour Beatty Communities Military Housing has been managing since July 1, 2005. Please take the time to make your “vote count” so that we can ensure this program will address your concerns and priorities with our housing. Your input through this survey will be used to help us to make better decisions on how we spend our limited housing dollars and will help guide our future commercial partners in providing the services and the facilities that are important to you. Your answers are strictly confidential, and we need your frank responses. We are not tabulating any personal data, and your survey in no way identifies you or the residence you currently occupy.

WSMR ranked third out of 35 Installations surveyed for overall customer satisfaction and first on response rate on the HQDA RCI Annual Survey.

Please bring your completed surveys to Balfour Beatty Communities community office in order to be eligible for drawing and prizes.

Newcomer’s orientation
Army Community Service offers the Newcomers Orientation the 2nd Tuesday and Wednesday each month 9 a.m. to noon on both days in Building 465.

Free lunch is provided on Wednesday by the Frontier Club for those who attend both days.

Free childcare is available with prior arrangements made through the Child Care Center at 678-2059. Shot records must be provided to child care center staff at time of service.

Lifeguard training
The Aquatics Center will be offering Lifeguard Training June 22-26 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This is open to ages 15 and older.

Certification fee is $150 and includes books. Children registered through CYS between 15 and 18 years may qualify to have the class paid for. For additional information, please contact the Aquatic Center at 678-1068.

Guitar and piano Instructors
The Community Center is seeking a guitar and piano instructor to teach lessons in Building 460.
