White Sand Missile Range employees and residents were educated on the dangers of a pandemic flu at a presentation held at the Professional Development Center June 19.
A pandemic is a worldwide outbreak of a disease. With the ability of modern air travel to move large groups of people around the entire world in less than a day, the chances of a large worldwide outbreak have increased.
Unlike the seasonal flu, which is a flu that people have already been exposed to, a pandemic flu will most likely be one that is new, possibly being transmitted from animals to humans for the first time. Since a pandemic flu will probably be one that hasn’t been seen in humans, it is unlikely there will be a vaccine for it. More people would be at risk with a pandemic flu than with the seasonal flu. Unlike the seasonal flu, in which the young and elderly are at risk of complications from the disease, a pandemic flu would place everyone at risk.

Morale Welfare and Recreation facilities to get facelifts
MWR is becoming bigger and better, but with growth comes change.
With growth the community often has to endure some growing pains, and sometimes an inconvenience is a necessity and requires drastic measures and temporary closures of facilities.
Such is the case with the Community Center located in Building 460. The Community Center is one of many ongoing projects the Directorate of Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation is working on in order to better serve customers.

Stay safe by using these barbecue tips
Fourth of July celebrations often involve a barbecue, but if you want to stay safe follow the following tips.
Before Cooking
Clean your barbecue to avoid grease buildup. Accumulated grease deposits frequently catch fire and are difficult to put out.
Choose a safe grilling location away from children’s play areas and areas of heavy traffic. The area should be well-ventilated to avoid the danger from carbon monoxide and other combustion byproducts.
Instruct children on the dangers of a lit grill.
NEVER leave a grill unattended.
