A-76/Competitive Sourcing
Representatives from the New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions provided range employees with information and answered questions during the Jan. 30 A-76 process update meeting at the Post Theater.
With the A-76 performance decision date pushed back to July 28, the Garrison Command group decided to use the time wisely by providing employment information to members of the workforce who could be affected by the A-76 outcome. “This in no way preempts any decision as far as what the end decision is going to be come July 2008…This is purely part of my dedication to (the workforce) to keep the lines of communication open,” said Col. Gary Giebel, White Sands Missile Range garrison commander.
Dominating the meeting was a presentation by the New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions, a team of representatives from different state agencies that provide information and assistance to New Mexico residents seeking employment.
The Department of Workforce Solutions, which consolidates the New Mexico Department of Labor and the Office of Workforce Training and Development, is charged with developing and maintaining a skilled and productive workforce for the increasingly competitive global economy.
Guest speakers from various state agencies spoke about their programs. One of those programs is New MexiKids, which helps improve access to children’s health insurance in New Mexico for children up to 18 years of age. For adults State Coverage Insurance can provide adults ages 19 to 64 with coverage similar to a basic commercial health plan. More information on these plans can be found by contacting the providers directly; Lovelace Health Plan (888) 665-5401, www.lovelacehealthplan.com, Molina Health Plan (866) 403-3018, www.molinahealthcare.com, Presbyterian Health Plan (866)593-7434, www.phs.org. Anyone seeking information on income support services offered in New Mexico, like Medicaid, Food Stamps, Low Income Energy Assistance, or Cash Assistance can apply at any Human Services local office, or visit www.hsd.state.nm.us for more information.
New Mexico residents with children who need child care have the option to get support from the state. For those who qualify the state can provide assistance for applicants who have a job or are in school and need child care for a child between the ages of six weeks and 13 years of age. The state will also assist applicants through the process of becoming a self employed childcare provider. For more information visit www.cyfd.org/ or call the Childcare Services Bureau at (505) 827-7499.
New Mexico Workforce Connection can assist with job searches, referrals and placement, and can even help people get higher wages. Even though New Mexico Workforce Connection currently does not offer training and education services, anyone interested can sign up and be put on a waiting list to receive training when funds become available. For more information check the New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions website at www.dws.state.nm.us.
Veterans’ services can help veterans in need of employment assistance. Veterans’ services can give priority to veterans in some job placement, counseling and testing opportunities. Veterans’ services can also provide referrals to other services and provide some job development and training opportunities. Veterans can contact the state veterans’ coordinator at (505) 841-8517 or visit their site at www.dws.state.nm.us.
Employees having trouble finding work after a reduction in force, unemployment insurance can pay benefits to those who are unemployed through no fault of their own. To be eligible you must be actively seeking employment for a minimum of 20 hours per week. Those receiving unemployment benefits will be required to make work search contacts and register with New Mexico Workforce Connection within two weeks of filing for unemployment.
