WSMR tax center is open for business
Soldiers, veterans and their dependents can have their taxes done by certified professionals for free at the WSMR Judge Advocate General’s office.
Members of the JAG office and garrison leadership welcomed another tax season with a ribbon cutting ceremony signifying the opening of the tax center for business.
"The goal is to save the Soldiers money," said Lt. Col. Joseph Keeler, WSMR's Staff Judge Advocate.

Credits can reduce taxes
Our last article focused on the first-time homebuyer credit. But there are several other credits that apply to 2009 tax returns...some are new.
These credits can lower your income tax and may turn a tax owed to a tax refund. Some of these credits can be difficult to figure—another reason for military members, retirees and dependents to contact the Volunteer Income Tax Advisor program at 678-1263 beginning Jan. 27.

Charitable donations can affect tax return
If you itemize deductions on Schedule A (Form 1040 or 1040NR) a new law allows you to choose to deduct certain charitable contributions of money on your 2009 tax return instead of your 2010 return. The contributions must have been made after Jan. 11, 2010, and before March 1, 2010, for the relief of victims in areas affected by the Jan. 12, 2010, earthquake in Haiti. Contributions of money include contributions made by cash, check, money order, credit card, charge card, debit card, or via cell phone.
The new law was enacted after the 2009 forms, instructions, and publications had already been printed. When preparing your 2009 tax return, you may complete the forms as if these contributions were made on Dec. 31, 2009, instead of in 2010.
