McAfee Health Clinic is now offering the H1N1 vaccine to those persons who fall into risk category two.
Enrolled patients identified as meeting the criteria for risk category are being called and advised of their opportunity to receive the vaccination.
Although the seasonal influenza vaccination and the H1N1 vaccination are not mandatory for beneficiaries, they are highly encouraged.
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention and Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices have defined priority groups for the receipt of H1N1 vaccine.
If you meet the criteria for Group 1 and did not elect to get the immunization but have decided you would like to get it, please contact McAfee at (575) 678-3448 or 678-2882 to schedule your immunization.
McAfee will now immunize everyone in Group 1 who wish to get the immunization and Group 2 before moving on to Group 3.
These risk groups are:
Group 1:
•Pregnant women,
•Household members/caretakers of infants less than 6 months old,
•Children 6-59 months of age,
•Children 5-18 years with certain chronic health conditions that increase their risk of complications from flu, and
•Health care workers and emergency medical service personnel with direct patient care
Group 2:
•Adults 25-64 years of age with chronic health conditions,
•All persons 5-24 years of age, and
•Health care workers and emergency medical services personnel without direct patient care
Group 3:
•Adults 25-64 years of age without chronic health conditions
Group 4:
•Adults 65 years and older
•Children under 6 months are too young to receive the flu vaccine, but they are among the most vulnerable to develop serious, even fatal, complications from flu. This makes vaccination of their close contacts especially critical.
•Persons with chronic health conditions are listed as having:
Cancer
Blood disorders (including Sickle Cell Disease)
Chronic lung disease (Asthma, COPD, Cystic Fibrosis)
Diabetes
Kidney disorders
Liver disorders
Neurological disorders (Epilepsy, Cerebral Palsy, brain or spinal cord injuries, moderate to profound intellectual disability [Mental Retardation] or developmental delay)
Neuromuscular disorders (Muscular Dystrophy, Multiple Sclerosis)
To prevent transmission of H1N1 and the seasonal flu:
•WASH HANDS or use hand sanitizers frequently (The virus can live up to 8 hours on surfaces)
•Avoid touching face, nose, mouth
•Cough/sneeze into sleeve, tissue, etc….not hands
•Keep common surfaces clean with disinfectants (phones, door knobs, keyboards, etc..)
•Use only your own towel at home
•Do not share sleeping areas with someone sick
•Wash linens frequently
•If you’re sick, STAY HOME!
•If you get sick:
•Consult BY PHONE with your primary care provider
•Stay away from the emergency room unless directed by your primary care provider
•Treat the symptoms; cough medications, hydrate, throat lozenges, etc.
